Every so often, a trend will start in the racing school industry, usually spurred by a desire for increased market share, or higher profitability.
In as much as our school is a profit making organization, we sometimes “go with the flow” if it does not impact the quality of our programs or conflict with the principles and philosophies on which our school is built.
The most recent trend gripping the industry has been towards shorter programs for license certification. Schools are now offering 3-day, and in one case, 2-day licensing schools, which allow participants to obtain S.C.C.A. certification and go racing.
This trend is disturbing to us, and one which we will not follow.
Mastering the art of performance driving is always a difficult, and sometimes a dangerous proposition. And while it is our belief that most of the learning occurs in the post school environment, it is nonetheless of critical importance to obtain a solid understanding of the basics in order to succeed safely in this sport. And, this simply cannot be rushed. To think that you can teach someone to be safe and competent in two days is simply irresponsible.
The Bertil Roos Racing School has been in operation for 35 years. During that time, we have learned a few things about teaching this sport. Things like the need for absorption time, ample track time and the variation in individual learning curves. And, perhaps the most important, to develop in our students a proper respect for the sport, especially once they are out in the “real” racing world.
This process simply cannot be rushed for the sake of profitability and market share. Our mandate is not simply to fill tracks with new drivers, but to insure that our graduates are competent, safe and competitive.
Without sounding sanctimonious, we simply will not cave in to this trend. Those who simply want the easy way to a competition license, are invited to look elsewhere. For those who want to learn how to race and win, welcome aboard!
