DANVILLE, Va. — Reiner Oberst and Tim Nichols scored weekend sweeps in rounds 3-4 of the Bertil Roos Race Series at Virginia International Raceway.
Oberst laid down the fast lap in Group 1 qualifying and parlayed that effort into a dominating win the first race of the May 5-6 weekend. Vinnie Virga, who was second fastest in qualifying, maintained his position to finish runner-up.
The real battle was for the final podium spot. Adam Colombo advanced from a sixth-place starting spot to edge defending Bertil Roos Race Series champion Andy Ourant for third.
In the second Group 1 race, Oberst powered his way to another victory. Geoff Valentino captured second place while Virga added to his strong weekend with a third-place run.
Nichols, the winningest driver in Bertil Roos Race Series history, added to his total with his Group 2 sweep. He had the fastest qualifying time of the weekend with his 1:23.48 run, making him the only driver to break the 1:24 barrier.
The strong performance continued in race No. 1 where Nichols captured the win over Derek Jose. Rookie driver Tommy Cadwalader made quite an impression by taking the final podium spot.
Nichols continued his mastery of the Danville, Va., road course in the second Group 2 race. Seth Foley rallied from 10thplace in the opening race to score the runner-up finish in the second race. Jose finished third and picked up his second podium of the weekend.
With the latest results, Oberst and Foley are tied atop the driver standings with 74 points each. The top five is extremely tight with Nichols third at 72 points, followed by Valentino with 71 points and Kirk Weatherman with 70 points.
