Ourant Sweeps Pocono Races to Increase Championship Lead

LONG POND, Pa. — Andy Ourant’s dream season in the Bertil Roos Race Series races continued at Pocono Raceway the last weekend in August.

Racing on the famed track’s North course, Ourant swept the weekend’s Group 1 races. He has won five of the last six races and seven of the last 10 races he has entered. The weekend’s Group 2 races were split between Glenn Brooks and Kevin Anderson.

No one in the Group 1 had anything for Ourant, the Pennsylvania driver who started on the pole and led flag-to-flag in both races. With his dominant performances, Ourant stretched his lead in the point standings to 253-200 over Gabe Jasper with four races remaining on the schedule.

The racing behind Ourant was intense with Jasper passing defending series champion Tim Nichols for second place. In the first race, Nichols overcame an unscheduled pit stop which dropped him to fifth to work his way back to third.

Justin Fierro finished fourth, while Vinnie Virga made a pass of Kirk Weatherman with one lap to go to take fifth.

The second race featured some of the same with Ourant out front and Jasper getting around Nichols in the race for the runner-up spot. Those three filled the podium again, while Adam Colombo finished fourth.

Weatherman and Virga made contact racing for fifth. Weatherman ended with the spot, while Virga retired with mechanical issues.

Group 2

Anderson made his presence known early in Group 2, passing Geoff Valentino for the lead on lap 2 of the first race.

He continued to show a fast pace out front, while Brooks got around Valentino for second. They continued to ride that way until the frantic final lap. Anderson spun, handing the lead and race win to Brooks.

Jason Auwarter passed Seth Foley for second as both got by Anderson. Valentino, who had to serve a penalty earlier in the race, charged back to a fifth-place finish.

Anderson wasn’t about to make the same mistake in the second race and bolted to the lead on the opening lap.

Auwarter ran a steady pace behind him, while Brooks and Valentino had a classic battle for third. Brooks passed Valentino on lap 2, and they exchanged the third position for four more times before the race ended.

Brooks finished third, followed by Valentino in fourth. Foley posted a fifth-place finish and pulled into a tie for third with Chris Sanford and Nichols in the championship standings.

Races No. 13 and 14 in the Bertil Roos Race Series are scheduled for Sept. 28-29 on Pocono Raceway’s South course.
