Race Recap: Ourant, Sanford Sweep Bertil Roos Races at Pocono

Andy Ourant took advantage of his opponents’ misfortunes to win the first of two Bertil Roos Racing Series races at Pocono Raceway last weekend. He simply powered ahead to win the second race for the Group 1 drivers.

Those were his 11th and 12th career wins in the Bertil Roos Racing Series.

Chris Sanford used the same outside move twice to sweep Group 2 races.

Ourant, a Pennsylvania driver who is a nationally known toys and games appraiser, started third in the first race. He moved to the runner-up spot on lap 3 of the 15-lap race around Pocono’s South and East road courses when Seth Foley went off course and had to come to the pits.

Three laps later, the car of defending series champion Tim Nichols starts developing motor issues, allowing Ourant to close the gap. Ourant catches and passes Nichols for the lead on lap 9 and races on to the win.

Adam Colombo, who started ninth, passed three cars on the opening lap and charged all the way to second. Robert Pielsticker, who fell all the way back to 10th after a spin on the opening lap, came back to finish third.

Gabe Jasper, who won the season-opening race at Palm Beach, finished fourth and Rich White rounded out the top five. Nichols, who set the fast lap in qualifying at 1:12.39, finished eight.

Ourant wasted no time in the second race, bolting from a second starting spot to the lead at the start of the race.

Pielsticker passed Geoff Valentino for second on lap 9 and the top two remained that way the rest of the race.

Rich White finished third and Valentino recovered from a lap 10 spin to finished fourth. Colombo ended a solid day with a fifth-place run.

Group 2

Sanford, a talented teenager from Connecticut, has already parlayed his Bertil Roos Racing School experience into becoming a top stock car racer at Stafford Speedway. Back behind the wheel of a Formula car, he made a move to the outside of polesitter Ira Nesbitt to take a lead that he would never relinquish.

Nesbitt, who set the fast time in qualifying at 1:13.19, finished second ahead of Vinnie Virga, who moved to third on lap 7 when he passed Connor Kennard and Vincent Caintic spun off course on the same lap.

Kennard came across in fourth with Jason Auwarter fifth.

Sanford pulled off the same move on Nesbitt to take the lead in race No. 2. Once out front, he led the rest of the race.

Nesbitt again raced to a runner-up finish and Kennard wound up third. Virga passed Auwarter for fourth as they rounded out the top-five finishers.

In the overall point standings, Ourant now leads by just a single point (87-86) over Pielsticker with Sanford in third with 71 points. Auwarter is fourth with 70 points, followed by Virga with 67 points.

The Bertil Roos Racing Series has an exhibition race at historic Lime Rock Park on April 30 and the third weekend of points races for the 16-race series is scheduled for May 25-26 at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt Course.
