Tiano Sweeps Bertil Roos Race Series Opener
March 21, 2021
JUPITER, Fla. — Frank Tiano got the 2021 Bertil Roos F2000 Race Series off in style with a sweep of races at the 2.2-mile Palm Beach International Raceway.
Tiano turned the second-fastest time of 1:37.89 in qualifying. Keeping a fast pace throughout the first race, he passed pole sitter Geoff Valentino on lap 7 and never looked back.
Kirk Weatherman kept the pressure on Valentino and moved into second a lap later. However with one lap to go, Weatherman spun in turn 8 coming onto the backstretch.
It opened the door for Adam Colombo and Tyler Pappas to race by and take the second and third positions. Valentino finished fourth and Javier Nazario rounded out the top five.
Valentino, who had the fast time of the day at 1:37.78, started on the pole again for the second race. However, he couldn’t hold back a determined Tiano, who rocketed to the lead on lap 4.
Tiano kept setting a fast pace out front, while the racing was intense behind him.
Valentino held off Weatherman until retiring on the final lap with mechanical issues. That heartbreak allowed Weatherman to take second with Colombo, Pappas and Nazario taking the other top-five spots.
It was quite a charge for Colombo and Pappas, who had to start at the back of the field after an incident on the first lap.
The sweep gives Tiano a 48-42 lead over Colombo in the point standings. Pappas is third with 38 points. Weatherman with 33 and Nazario with 32 points are fourth and fifth.
The 2021 Summer Series returns to action May 3-4 at Virginia International Raceway.
